The Seminar on ‘Port-Led City Development’ is a significant and forward-thinking event being organized by Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in January 2024 aimed to explore, discuss, and promote the transformative potential of port-led city development.
Background:
Port-led city development is a visionary approach that leverages the economic and infrastructural potential of ports to catalyze the growth of adjacent urban centers. With rising energy demand, energy security is a pressing concern for India and the state. To address these challenges, this seminar is being organized with the primary focus on exploring solutions and strategies. Gujarat has been a pioneer in the renewable energy sector in India. The state has been driving on the sustainability pathway and has successfully increased renewable energy capacity from 8 GW to 22 GW in the last decade. Gujarat is one of the most economically developed state in India, which has per capita electricity consumption of almost double, that of India’s average. With increasing economic activities, the electricity demand is expected to grow at a much faster rate. Given the high potential of RE sources available in Gujarat, the state is focused on to serving the electricity demand through RE sources. As India targets 67% share of RE in electricity generation by 2047, the state aims to achieve the target well before the national target and set an example for the other states. Recently, the state government has announced a comprehensive Renewable Energy Policy that aims to prioritize the shift to renewable energy and serve as a benchmark for other states in India. The policy includes wind, solar, and hybrid renewable energy systems, the removal of capacity restrictions on voluntary users of renewable energy, and the recognition of large OEMs as developers. It also provides clarity on Inter-State Transmission System mechanisms and supports technological innovation in wind turbines. This policy is expected to accelerate renewable energy projects in Gujarat and contribute to India’s net zero emissions goal. This seminar comprises four key sessions that aim to shed light on various aspects crucial for mitigating energy security issues and fostering sustainable development. Each session is meticulously designed to contribute towards the overarching objective of the seminar: ensuring energy security and addressing India's escalating energy demands through sustainable means.

Global Scenario and Emerging Trends in Offshore Wind: The session particularly focuses on offshore wind energy which is pivotal in understanding the global landscape and trends towards adoption of offshore wind energy. India, endowed with an extensive coastline, holds immense potential in harnessing offshore wind resourceswith about 36 GW potential in the states of Gujarat and Tamilnadu only. This session is set to highlight success stories and pivotal learnings from other nations, providing insights into adopting best practices and overcoming challenges in the domain. Embracing offshore wind energy having highest capacity utilizing factor amongst other Renewable Energy could substantially bolster India's renewable energy portfolio and contribute significantly to meeting its energy needs sustainably.
2. Emerging Technologies and Trends in Renewable Energy Sector: The second session focuses on exploring the latest advancements and trends within the renewable energy sector. Innovation in renewable energy technologies is critical for India's energy security goals. Highlighting emerging trends and technologies will enable participants to comprehend the evolving landscape, encouraging the adoption of cutting-edge solutions to address the growing energy demand more efficiently and sustainably. At present, efficiency improvement of solar PV modules, wind turbine innovations, energy storage breakthroughs, and smart grid integration are shaping the future of renewable energy sector. 3. RE Power Evacuation and Grid Integration Strategies: Efficient power evacuation and grid integration are indispensable for effectively utilizing renewable energy sources. Given the variable nature of RE generation and the challenges associated with the grid management with increased RE penetration, this session aims to delve into strategies for seamless integration of renewable energy into the existing power grid. Developing robust evacuation infrastructure and grid integration strategies is crucial to optimizing renewable energy usage and ensuring reliable power supply. In order to facilitate renewable power evacuation and reshaping the grid for future requirements, the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) projects have been initiated by intra/inter-states in phased manner. Also, huge investment in transmission network up gradation has been planned and Tariff based Competitive bidding approach has been adopted for timely availability of transmission infrastructure for RE power evacuation in the state.
4. Entrepreneurship Opportunities in RE Sector: Startups & Innovations: This session focuses on entrepreneurship opportunities within the renewable energy sector. Encouraging startups and fostering innovation are pivotal in driving the renewable energy sector's growth. This session aims to explore how innovative ideas and entrepreneurial ventures can play a significant role in scaling up renewable energy deployment in India. Promoting Entrepreneurship and Startups will ensure an unprecedented wave of long deserved growth, prosperity and wellbeing that can serve the interests of the rest of the world as well as the spirit of New India. Creating a nation of job-creators and not just job seekers is important for sustainable growth. And central to this, is the need for extensive collaboration between corporate industry, academia, and governments at the village, district, state and central levels in RE sector. 5. Panel Discussion on “Project Strategy for Offshore wind in India” Followed by the sessions, will be a Panel Discussion on “Project Strategy for Offshore wind in India”.
